Fears grow of Israel-Iran missile shootout

Iran's Revolutionary Guards test fire a missile during military maneuvers at an undisclosed location Sept. 27, 2009. The maneuvers were aimed at "increasing the country's defensive capability in case of a long-lasting foreign invasion," state-run media reports said.

By Robert WindremNBC News

With tensions between Israel and Iran running sky high over the latter?s nuclear program, U.S. officials and military analysts are growing increasingly concerned that Israel will launch a multi-phase air and missile attack that could trigger waves of retaliatory missile strikes from Tehran.?

Such a shootout could quickly spiral into a regional conflict that would potentially force the U.S. to intervene to protect its interests.?

The emerging consensus among current and former U.S. officials and other experts interviewed by NBC News is that that an Israeli attack would be a multi-faceted assault on key Iranian nuclear installations, involving strikes by both warplanes and missiles. It could also include targeted attacks by Israeli special operations forces and possibly even the use of massive explosives-laden drones, they say.?

The Iranian response to such an attack is uncertain, but many experts and officials believe it is likely to include retaliatory missile strikes. Iran has more missiles in its arsenal than Israel, according to some estimates, and has the capability of striking targets in most Israeli population centers.?

?I think that it would strike Iran as a reasonable response, an eye for an eye,? said Christopher J Ferrero, a professor of diplomacy at Seton Hall University in New Jersey and an expert on Middle East missile forces.

He also said Iran would likely attack major cities with its Shahab 3 missiles, which he said are not as accurate as the Israeli missiles, but would be an effective ?instrument of terror ? that could certainly cause significant damage to heavily populated suburban and urban areas.??

Israel possesses advanced anti-missile defenses, but those systems could be overwhelmed if Tehran launched large numbers of missiles, as Ferrero expects.??

Given the immense difficulties in carrying out successful air strikes on the four key Iranian installations using its warplanes alone -- as laid out last week by the New York Times,?U.S. officials say Israel would be likely to coordinate such airstrikes with waves of missiles. This would greatly increase the chances of penetrating fortifications that Iran has built to protect some of its key installations and overwhelm Iran?s air defenses, said the former and current U.S. officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity.?

?Two words:? Jericho missiles,? said one former White House and Pentagon official, speaking on condition of anonymity, when asked how Israel would attack Iranian targets at great distances. ?They are conventionally armed, have a very small CEP (circular error of probability, meaning they are highly accurate) and can be used in conjunction with a strike fighter operation.??

Israel has as many as 100 Jericho ballistic missiles ? both short- and medium-range ? as well as submarine-launched cruise missiles, though the officials say they believe the latter are unlikely to be used. The short-range Jericho I missiles would be of no use in an attack on Iran, because the targets are far beyond its 300-mile range. However, the? medium-range Jericho II?s are capable of? hitting targets as far as 900 miles away ? or as far east as Tehran. Israel also tested a Jericho III intercontinental ballistic missile in 2008 and Israeli media have reported that it may have deployed one or more of the weapons, which would put all of Iran within reach.?

The missiles would most likely be launched from the Hirbat Zekharyah missile range, midway between Israel and the Mediterranean Coast, according to "Critical Mass: the Dangerous Race for Superweapons in a Fragmenting World," by William E. Burrows and Robert Windrem, and various Israeli press reports.?

Although designed to be part of Israel?s nuclear deterrent force, the Jerichos can be equipped with high explosives as well as nuclear warheads. U.S. officials have said that an Israeli attack, if it happens, would be intended to surgically take out the nuclear facilities, not inflict the mass casualties that would result from a nuclear attack.?

Related coverage:

Panetta report fuels concerns that Israel will attack Iran

Iran has no capability to defend against a missile strike, said Ferrero, the expert on Middle East missile arsenals.?

?If the Jerichos are accurate enough to get to their targets, they will get to their targets,? he said.?

What Iran does have is hundreds of Shahab 3 medium range ballistic missiles, according to U.S. estimates. The Shahab 3 also has a range of roughly 900 miles.?

Israel, possibly supplemented by U.S. shipborne anti-missile systems ? the Aegis Standard Missile-2 -- could intercept and destroy some of the incoming Iranian missiles, said Ferrero. But the numbers favor Iran, he said.?

?I believe that (the Iranians) have a sufficient inventory that they could overwhelm those missile defenses and still get enough missiles through to cause damage,? he said.?

The critical? factor may be the number of? missile launchers in Iran?s inventory, Ferrero said, because penetrating Israel?s defenses would require numerous ?missiles, but also enough launchers to be able to fire them off simultaneously. That number is a closely guarded secret, he said.

Additionally, U.S. intelligence estimates say Iran has supplied Hezbollah with more than 40,000 short-range rockets and missiles since 2006. However, U.S. officials are uncertain whether Hezbollah would follow Iranian orders, and risk Israeli retaliation or, if they did, how many they would fire.? The majority of the rockets and missiles are unguided.? Israel and the U.S. have worked on a short-range missile defense system called Iron Dome, but there are concerns that waves of attacks could overwhelm the system.?

Also open to question in U.S. and Israeli military circles is whether an Israeli attack would meet its objective: setting back the Iranian nuclear program anywhere from two to five years.?

U.S. officials say Israel would be likely to concentrate its attacks on four key Iranian nuclear complexes. Key facilities within those complexes ? the Natanz and Fordo centrifuge facilities, both south of Tehran; the Arak research reactor, southwest of Tehran; and a uranium hexafloride production and research facility near the city of Isfahan ? are protected by heavy fortifications, they said.

The Jerichos are stored in tunnels in limestone formations around Hirbat Zekharyah and rolled out for firing. They would likely be used as part of a one-two punch, the officials say. The first attack would be carried out by Israeli strike fighters and would be intended to breach the heavily fortified outer ceilings of the facilities. The second (and possibly even third) wave would be missile attacks aimed at destroying the facilities within, the officials said.?

Asked if Jerichos would have the accuracy and the explosive power to take out hardened bunkers or fortifications believed to be protecting Iran?s most-sensitive underground nuclear facilities, a current U.S. official replied, ?You would be surprised at their accuracy.? The official added that the missiles? warheads would contain a special mix of explosives that could penetrate the Iranian defenses.?

U.S. officials also say Israel may have learned the location of facilities that fabricate centrifuge components. These, too, could be targeted.?

A 2010 book on the possibility of an Israeli attack laid out the difficulties Israel would face if it attempted to use only its strike fighters on those targets.

??Attacks against the sites at Natanz, Isfahan and Arak alone would stretch Israel?s capability and planners might be reluctant to enlarge the raid further,? wrote authors Steven Simon and Dana H. Allin, in ?The Sixth Crisis ? Iran, Israel and the Rumors of War.? Simon, then a fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations, now heads the Middle East Desk at the National Security Council.?

The biggest problem is the fortification of the two centrifuge facilities. Simon and Allin describe the challenge using aircraft only.?

?Natanz is the only one of the ? likely targets that is largely underground, sheltered by up to 23 meters (75 feet) of soil and concrete,? they wrote. ?? Bombs used in a ?burrowing? mode, however, could penetrate deeply enough to fragment the inner surface of the ceiling structures above the highly fragile centrifuge arrays and even precipitate the collapse of the entire structure.??

But for the attack to have high odds of success, they argue, aircraft would have to drop additional bombs into the cavities created by the first bombs. That would require ?time on target? -- a luxury that the Israeli jets at the outermost limits of their 1,100-mile range would likely not have. While they estimate the success rate of such a plan at ?better than 70 percent,? they call it ?complicated and highly risky.??

Another difficulty for attacking Israeli aircraft would be finding a route to the targets that could be flown covertly or with the tacit approval of Sunni Arab states, who are at least as frightened of an Iranian nuclear capability as the Israelis.?

Simon and Allin (and others) have written that there are three ?plausible routes? that Israeli warplanes would take to attack Iran: a northern approach, likely along the Syrian-Turkish border; a central path that would take them over Jordan and Iraq; and a southern route that would transit the lower end of Jordan, Saudi Arabia and Kuwait. The southern route is the most likely, U.S. officials suggest, because the Saudis and other Sunni-dominated Gulf states are eager for someone to take out the Iranian threat. They prefer the U.S. do it, but have reportedly shared intelligence on the Iranian program with the Israelis, if only on a limited basis, according to the U.S. officials.?

No matter what route the fighter bombers take, they would use what one U.S. official described as ?high-low, low-high? flight paths ? flying high first to increase fuel efficiency, then low for most of the trip to evade radar, then climbing high again as the bombs are released in what is known as a ?flip toss? from as far as 10 miles from the target.?

The Israelis would be prepared to lose aircraft if necessary, the officials said.?

Although Simon and Allin do not discuss adding a missile component, other experts, including many current and former U.S. officials, believe the Israelis already have made a decision to have them in the attack menu.?

Missile attacks would be coordinated with fighter-bomber attacks (presumably, the Israelis? F-16, F-18 and extended-range F-15I Strike Eagle). The missiles would have to be launched so that warheads strike targets following the strike fighter attacks.? Because of the short flight time, minutes rather than hours in the case of the aircraft, the missile launch would almost certainly take place at the last possible moment to ensure the secrecy of the overall attack.?

The Israelis are not planning to use their submarine-launched cruise missile force -- ?not enough of them,? one official said of the subs. (The Israelis have long had nuclear tipped sub-launched cruise missiles as part of their deterrent force.)??

Beyond the strike fighters and the missile force, U.S. officials suggest the Israelis could use two other ?weapons? against Iran.?

The first is special operations forces that would be secretly inserted into the country. At the least, they could be employed to illuminate aim points for laser-guided bunker-busting bombs. At the most, they could launch their own attacks on facilities, particularly those believed to contain enriched uranium.?

The other is a new generation of large drones with wingspans approaching those of a Boeing 777? (almost 200 feet). Costing $30 million each, the Heron drones are capable of remaining airborne for 40 hours at a time and have a range of 4,600 miles. While they can be equipped with surveillance and electronic warfare equipment, some officials call them ?strike drones,? meaning they could be loaded with explosives and used to attack Iranian targets.?

While the initial days of an Israeli-Iranian conflict would probably be bloody, most experts say that the open warfare would be expected to wind down within days or weeks, since neither side has the ability to occupy the other?s territory or enough missiles to sustain attacks.?

But that would bring with it its own set of problems, as the conflict would be likely to continue on a lower level, involving covert operations and terrorism.?

?You could have a very nasty covert war emerge,? said Ferrero.

Scosche FlipCharge Burst

The Scosche FlipCharge Burst ($49.99 direct) is a portable battery for your iPhone or iPod that can help you get a small charge when you're in a pinch. However, it's a little expensive for the limited juice it can provide.

The Burst is a small, pocket-friendly device, measuring 2.31 by 1.75 by 0.49 inches (HWD) and weighing in at just 1.2 ounces. You get a built-in carabiner, which makes it slightly larger on one side, but still very portable?plus it adds the ability to clip on to bags, key rings, or anything else you can think of. True to its name, the FlipCharge Burst has a 30-pin Apple docking connector that flips easily in and out. It charges via an integrated USB cable that handily stows away in a magnetic notch inside the Burst. This USB cable also allows you to charge and sync your iPhone or iPod. It's a nice touch, since carrying around an extra cable can be a pain.?inline

Four blue LED lights indicate the level of charge. A button on the side of the Burst activates the LEDs, but, oddly, the lights are very bright, and I found myself turning the Burst over to conceal them.?There's a?720mAh battery inside.

In my tests with the iPhone 4S, the Burst added just 3 hours, 17 minutes of continuous 3G talk time. But the FlipCharge Burst isn't meant to be used as an everyday power solution, but rather as an emergency source to give you a little more juice when you're in a pinch. The similarly portable Mophie Juice Pack Reserve?($34.95, 3 stars), with its 700mAh battery, added 3 hours, 33 minutes, which is a negligible increase over the Scosche. The Juice Pack Reserve has a better design and costs $15 less, but you give up pass through charging and syncing.

If you want a more comprehensive power solution, check out some iPhone battery cases, like our Editors' Choice Mophie Juice Pack Plus?($99, 4 stars), which added an impressive 10 hours, 43 minutes of talk time to the iPhone 4S. Though it only adds limited battery life and isn't cheap for its capacity, the Burst is a nice, portable companion that can easily be clipped to a bag or belt loop so it's close at hand in case of a mobile power emergency.

42,000 Irish men and women are hoping to conduct an extramarital affair. And with help from the internet they're exploring physical relationships outside of their own marriages.

According to the Evening Herald there are an eye-popping 630,000 registered users from Ireland and the UK making using of IllicitEncounters.com - a website that discreetly helps people on the look out for affairs online.

Not everyone thinks a cheating website deserves any attention, of course. But the owner has defended what she calls her 'match-making' service. Rosie Freeman-Jones claims she does not feel guilty about the nature of the site, which was founded in 2003.

Said Freeman-Jones: 'I don't think there is a great moral problem, we don't necessarily think an affair is a bad thing. I've been doing this job for four years and I sleep very well at night. I am comfortable with it. People come to a site like ours simply because they want to feel they are not alone, if they are bored in their relationship. We recognize that this is happening and it is happening on a huge scale, our impact on marriages of the masses is very small.'

'In a way it provides a bit of perspective. Once they have gone elsewhere they might think, no this is not what I want and that is a win, win for us.'

But living a second life doesn't come cheap. Men who join have to be willing to pay $133 a month to avail of the service, and that's whether they're looking to flirt or pursue a physical affair.

Freeman-Jones claims the majority of the sites users are aged between 35 and 40 and are financially stable.

'I think we have a tendency to demonize people who seek extramarital relationships and I think there is a fundamental problem with that.

'At the end of the day we are looking at between 40 percent and 60 percent of people who will cheat. You can either ignore it and say it is wrong and put it in a box somewhere or you can acknowledge it.

'Some people, maybe their confidence is low and they might come online just to flirt a bit. There are people who come looking for a specific type of relationship. I think there are quite a lot of things that motivate people and I don't think they are things you would expect.

'I don't think everybody using the site is missing something at home and that is something that is important to get across. These aren't people who are necessarily in an unhappy marriage but this a feeling among them that they get to a stage in their life where they feel as if they should be happy with their monogamous relationship and they are not and they feel confused and conflicted,' she added.

Google reportedly (and unsurprisingly) picks Dennis Woodside to replace Sanjay Jha as Motorola Mobility CEO

Dennis Woodside

Google has selected Dennis Woodside to be the new CEO of Motorola Mobility, replacing Sanjay Jha, according to three people speaking to Blomberg. Woodside is a Google executive who led the company's ad business in North America before overseeing the Google/Motorola Mobility merger.

The deal was recently approved by both the European Commission and the U.S. Department of Justice, so it makes sense that these decisions are being made now.

From the beginning of the acquisition, Google has insisted that Motorola Mobility will remain an independent entity. Google and Motorola Mobility have yet to issue an official announcement.

Razer Blade review

Typically, when a company wants to meet, you expect more of the same -- not a change in strategy, nor a decision to enter an entirely new product category. So when Razer wanted to meet us one bright, oddly cold San Franciscan morning last August, we certainly weren't expecting to meet its CEO, Tan Min-Liang, and we definitely weren't prepared to find a 17-inch prototype laptop, henceforth known as the Blade.

Shaving puns aside, we listened to Liang proudly wax on about the results of nearly three years of development, much of which involved recruiting a bevy of talent from the now-defunct OQO. What they'd accomplished, according to Liang, was the "world's first true gaming portable." An audacious statement, sure, especially considering the Blade was to be Razer's foray into the PC market. No matter. Liang's impetus was clear: the outfit would cater to gamers who'd been left in a vacuum after formerly gaming-obsessed companies sold out, leaving the segment to languish. His angle, however, would be different. The Blade wasn't going to be a gaudy, gargantuan, no-holds barred device with outright performance in mind. No, instead the 0.8-inch thick aluminum beaut would attempt to straddle the worlds of portability with performance, seeking to hit a perfectly balanced middle ground.

That sounded reasonable, but judging by reactions from most of you, the decision to stuff this $2,799 rig with a mid-range GeForce GT 555M card wasn't. Nor was the call to kit it with a paltry 320GB of rotational storage. Razer would rectify the latter in December, promising 256GB SSDs for all -- a concession that would push shipments back, well, until now. Still, even after toying with it briefly at CES, our impressions were ultimately shallow, as we couldn't get much of a feel for it in that controlled environment. Which brings us to the present day, and with Razer graciously airdropping a Blade onto our doorstep, does this experimental laptop stand up to its maker's gutsy claims? Or will those who've shelled just shy of three grand be sorely disappointed with its execution? Well, there's only one way to find out, and that's to join us past the break.

The Ground Breaking Toyota Prius Hybrid Car ? Our Automobile Of ...

Many accolades have been presented to the Prius Hybrid vehicle by Toyota. As one of the most popular competitors in the hybrid car initiative, the Toyota Prius has made a definite mark in the motor industry. With the development of hybrid cars, the Prius among them, rising gas prices and eco-friendly attitudes are being addressed. The Prius is in fact the first hybrid car to be mass-produced for the general public. Just before being offered worldwide in 2001, it was exclusively sold in Japan, starting in 1997.

The Prius gained a lot of notoriety from environmentalists who stated that it would get rid of air pollution. North American sales have been steadily growing ever since the Prius was released in that market. close of the year in 2006, the Prius had the greatest preorder and waiting list, with its hybrid in such strong demand. views their car as a means to supply consumers with a choice of an energy-efficient vehicle that would produce less pollution. The Prius was created from the bottom, and has become a genuine hybrid car that is well-loved throughout the world.

No prior electric car had been developed in the way that the Toyota engineers thought to develop the Prius. While this is all appropriate to your discovery, a few items about toyota extended auto warranty hold more weight than others. It recharges anytime the car engine is running and does not require that it be plugged into an independent outlet. The batteries are charged via the process of regenerative braking whereby kinetic energy transforms electrical energy. In 2004, the 2nd generation of Prius hybrids was unveiled and included a new Hybrid Synergy Drive technology. A growing number of improvements in hybrid technology have created an even better Toyota Prius.

Toyota has additionally made it more relaxing for tall people to drive by improving the height and width of the new car. This gives tall people the chance to view the road clearly without compromising their posture. Toyota is also adding hybrid versions of some of their other popular vehicles. Such as the Toyota Camry hybrid together with the lavish Lexus RX400H. The engineering superiority of the Prius has gone a long way, and it has become the choice for many people because of its outstanding reputation. It?s not unheard of to find celebrities driving Toyota Prius automobiles to demonstrate their support for the environmental movement.

Toyota can be expected to consistently update their hybrid engineering in order to benefit from the significant success they have experienced with the Prius. There?s hope for our planet if Toyota continues their development of environmentally sound cars because people will no longer have any reason for not decreasing their gas consumption. Through support and understanding, this can grow to be a reality.

Diabetes has a tendency to impact individuals, that are within the ...

I talk to folks every single evening who have scars from previous multi-level marketing disappointments and failures. A majority of individuals have failed in a couple of MLM businesses while they figure out how you to be successful in this amazing business.

How will you get on the quick path to success? What do you need to find out? Our analysis and experience indicates that to actually be successful in multi-level marketing you?ll need five important ingredients;

~ Company exec Experience with truthfulness ~ Timing inside the Business / Enterprise ~ Amazing Product(s) ~ A Pay Plan For your part time distributors ~ Coaching & Marketing System For team result

Now I would like to speak about the last element; the training and marketing program. It is unfortunate to see so many individuals attempting to be productive in multilevel marketing on their own, because a majority they find themselves failing.

The folks who succeed in network marketing employ an effective program which can be copied by every person in their network. You need a genuine training and marketing program to help every person in your group succeed.

What makes up an excellent multilevel marketing coaching program?

To begin with, the best Network marketing training systems are provided free of charge. Additionally, there should be coaching that features both online and conventional marketing facts about how to develop the organization.

When I refer to advertising training I?m not really referring to sales training. Instead I?m talking about using the proper tools to find people who?re considering multi-level marketing, since these are the only folks you need to talk with about your business.

The system must feature self improvement coaching to ensure you will become a leader that other individuals would like to work with. Not all marketing and advertising processes can be performed online, so you need to learn a sensible way to speak to people using a telephone and in person.

Do not forget that network marketing is all about establishing friendships and is not all about selling. People want to know two things; Are they able to do the work? Can you assist them?

This is the reason why using an easy coaching and advertising system is so important to your achievements. It indicates to folks that they can carry out this particular business and that you are clearly open to assist them!

You no longer have to know all things about the business if you have a process to adhere to. All you have to do is teach people to find the place in the program where they are able to obtain the info they want. This allows you to invest a lot more energy around continuously building your own business and spending your time with family members.

The problem is; do you actually want to be more productive in MLM, get more leads and avoid frauds? Answer: Do some homework before you join any MLM & make sure you download Jeff?s excellent free e-book for Network marketing training, learn the 10 steps to online marketing training, and start today! Sporting's Onyewu out 8 weeks for knee surgery

updated 3:29 p.m. ET Feb. 21, 2012

LISBON, Portugal - Sporting Lisbon and U.S. national team defender Oguchi Onyewu needs knee surgery and will be sidelined for eight weeks.

The Portuguese club says medical scans performed Tuesday revealed a torn ligament and meniscus in Onyewu's right knee, an injury sustained in Sunday's 1-0 victory over Pacos Ferreira.

He injured his left knee on Oct. 14, 2009, tearing his patellar tendon during a World Cup qualifier against Costa Rica. He returned to action the following May 25, in time for the 2010 World Cup, but struggled and did not fully regain his form until this season in Portugal.

Onyewu has five goals this season for Sporting, including four in the league. The club is fourth in the Portuguese league standings, 13 points behind first-place Benfica.

(AP) ? Within the last week, authorities say, Amine El Khalifi's plan to wreak havoc was proceeding as hoped: An al-Qaida associate handed him an automatic weapon to kill security officers inside the U.S. Capitol. A bomb-laden vest would detonate the building. He would die as a martyr.

But there was a problem: The explosives were inert, the gun inoperable and the supposed al-Qaida member was actually an undercover officer, according to court documents.

El Khalifi was arrested Friday in a parking garage on his way to carry out an attack the FBI says he kicked around for months, even detonating a practice bomb in a quarry, all with varied targets in mind.

An FBI affidavit traces the evolution of the plot from a vague plan to prepare for the "war on Muslims" to more clearly articulated visions of attacking a restaurant and synagogue to, finally, a goal of obliterating the seat of American government. The document alleges a weeks-long flurry of final activity by El Khalifi, monitored by the FBI and coordinated through an undercover agent, to scope out the building, train in explosives and arm himself for a suicide attack.

As El Khalifi, 29, was making a court appearance Friday on a terrorism-related charge, the FBI executed search warrants inside a gated residential community in Alexandria and at a red-brick rambler in Arlington, though it wasn't immediately known what they found.

El Khalifi is scheduled to have a bond hearing Wednesday. A public defender at El Khalifi's initial appearance didn't return a phone message Saturday. If he is indicted and convicted, he could face life in prison.

Authorities have released only basic biographical details about El Khalifi and haven't described how they believe he became intent on destruction. He was born in Morocco and came to the United States in 1999, when he was 16, overstaying his visitor visa and remaining in the country illegally, court papers say. He is unemployed and is not believed to be associated with al-Qaida.

In 2010, he aroused the suspicion of a former landlord, Frank Dynda, who leased him a one-bedroom apartment inside a brick building in Arlington before ultimately evicting him for not paying rent. He said El Khalifi lived with a woman, whose name was used to secure the lease. Dynda recalled the woman as Bulgarian and said he was under the impression they were married.

She had a job, but El Khalifi appeared not to have rent money.

"She looked good on paper. He looked terrible on paper," Dynda said.

Dynda said El Khalifi periodically received heavy boxes labeled "Books" from Baltimore and advertised his apartment as some sort of luggage business, though Dynda said he never saw any luggage there. The woman moved out, and two or three other men resembling El Khalifi began staying there, Dynda said. The rent checks stopped coming.

Dynda confronted El Khalifi for being a squatter, but he said El Khalifi told him he had a right to be there and threatened to assault him. Dynda called police, but he said officers advised him to treat El Khalifi like a legal tenant. He moved out that summer.

"He was going to harm me, and I think I'm very lucky to be alive today," Dynda said.

The investigation that led to El Khalifi's arrest started last January on a confidential informant's tip to the FBI. The informant described a meeting inside an Arlington apartment, where a person who produced an AK-47, two revolvers and ammunition said the war on terror equated with a "war on Muslims" and urged the group to prepare for battle. El Khalifi, the FBI learned, expressed agreement.

The FBI doesn't believe he was conspiring with anyone else, and court documents in El Khalifi's case don't give further details about the meeting in the Arlington apartment and the other people who were there. Police are investigating others with whom El Khalifi associated, but not because they believe the associates were part of a terror conspiracy, a counterterrorism official has told The Associated Press.

By December, authorities say the sting operation and El Khalifi's own plans were taking shape.

That month, he traveled to Baltimore with a man he knew as Hussien to meet a person who was introduced to him as an al-Qaida associate, authorities say. He told the man, Yusuf, that he planned to blow up a building just outside Washington in Alexandria, Va., that contained military offices. Handling the man's AK-47, he spoke of wanting to "use a gun and kill people face to face," according to the complaint.

Unbeknownst to El Khalifi, the man who called himself Yusuf was an undercover law enforcement officer. Hussien was an operative working undercover with investigators.

As the meetings continued, the plans evolved.

El Khalifi spoke in December of wanting to attack a synagogue and Army generals. But within days, he was settling on a new plan to bomb a Washington restaurant at lunchtime after a waiter told him that was the busiest time, the affidavit says.

On Jan. 8, in preparation for the restaurant attack and a planned al-Qaida attack on a military installation, authorities say he bought two jackets and a cell phone. He agreed to buy more phones, nails and glue to use in bomb-making and said he would be happy killing 30 people, authorities say.

He changed his mind a week later, saying he wanted to blow himself up inside the Capitol as an act of martyrdom and selected the date of Feb. 17, prosecutors say. He went on something of a test run on Jan. 15, using a cell phone to detonate a test bomb at a West Virginia quarry. But instead of being satisfied with the explosion, the FBI says, he wanted a bigger bomb and more damage.

Court papers show the last two weeks were consumed with the planned attack on the Capitol. El Khalifi selected a location to be dropped off. He asked that even more explosives be strapped to his body. He wanted to ensure the bomb in his vest could be remotely detonated in case he faced security problems, authorities say.

The final planning happened in an Alexandria hotel room on Valentine's Day, when authorities say "Yusuf" handed El Khalifi an automatic machine gun and showed him a jacket that the suspect thought contained a bomb, the affidavit says. El Khalifi studied himself in the mirror with the weapon. He practiced shooting it. He discussed how he would be identified in a video al-Qaida would release after the attack.

By Friday, the plans were firms.

El Khalifi got into a van in northern Virginia with Yusuf and Hussien. The gun and vest he had asked for were inside. The van pulled into a parking garage near the Capitol. El Khalifi got out alone in preparation, investigators say, to carry out his plot.

Before he could leave the garage, he was arrested.

The Company?s business is Resort Ownership and Management, Land and Property Leasing, carried out at Golden Buddha Beach Resort on Koh Phra Thong.

THE LAND

This is a magical place for investors as well as guests. Local land value has risen 500% in the past seven years. Titled beachfront land for sale on the island is a scarce resource and prices are set to escalate dramatically.

Described as the most stunning privately owned beachfront land anywhere north of Phuket, the Resort sits on a peninsula with two pristine beaches and a total of 1,250 metres of beachfront.

Half of the land, though owned by the Company, is leased to private Members who abide by land use and building regulations stipulated by the Company, while the other 16 acres is open for further expansion and development. This land currently serves as parkland and cultivated gardens, replete with mature trees, plants and a freshwater pond.

THE RESORT

The Resort is thriving, with steadily increasing revenues and healthy profits. Occupancy rate in January 2012 was 76%.

As well as being ranked the #1 hotel in the Thai holiday province of Phang Nga, Golden Buddha Beach Resort earned a Certificate of Excellence from Trip Advisor in May 2011 and is also rated an exceptional 90% on the hip travel site i-escape.

THE ISLAND

Koh Phra Thong lies between its famous developed neighbours Phuket (60 miles to the south) and Koh Chang (50 miles to the north)

The island is an ecological paradise and the most attractive of a small archipelago of three islands, with the mountainous Koh Ra immediately to the north (covered with primary rainforest) and the flat, more developed Koh Kho Khao immediately to the south.

Remarkably, apart from one road and some dirt tracks, the Island is still undeveloped. There is still an opportunity for an investor to get in on the ground before mains electricity comes to the island next year and with it, higher land prices.

The east coast of the island is covered by estuaries and mangroves, the centre is mostly gorgeous savannah with spots of forest and occasional freshwater ponds, while the west coast features the spectacular 10km long Golden Buddha Beach which is the main attraction.

There are no more than 500 inhabitants on the whole island.

As the nesting site for 137 species of beautiful and colourful birds, the island is one of the best locations for bird watching in Thailand.

It is also a diver?s dream, the Resort being the closest point to the spectacular world top ten diving site Richelieu Rock (35 km) and the Surin Islands (60 km), both easily accessible by boat. Friendly Whale sharks, Dolphins and the rare Dudong (sea cow) swim offshore.

GETTING THERE

An excellent road (the Phuket Ranong highway) runs from Phuket airport to Kuraburi pier in a little over two hours, or from Ranong airport in one hour. The Resort is reached by long-tailed boat from the mainland Kuraburi pier in 90 mins.

More details are available from the property website plus?a full Sale Prospectus containing Company accounts and details of the Valuation is available to qualified buyers.

Tips on Commercial Real Estate Financing | Tourist Destinations ...

Many large banking companies now rely upon commercial finance as a profit-making tool despite a decline in residential sales. Commercial real estate loans are perceived as a less-risky investment for companies that have large reserves of capital. Although the single family home sales are on the decline, the commercial real estate market is growing. If you?re struggling to understand the concepts behind commercial real estate loans, first examine the difference between commercial financing and residential financing. Residential loans are applicable for single families, whereas commercial loans apply to larger groups, such as a corporate office building or a large condominium compound. Most residential loans are given at a maximum of several hundred thousand dollars; commercial real estate loans are much higher, sometimes reaching millions or billions of dollars.

Commercial loans are seen as a secure place to invest, even though a bank or other investment firm might be adding more money into it. They are very strict about which businesses receive these loans. The companies must prove they have collateral, assets, and a business history shown on income statements. All these pieces of information are used to decide if the business is worthy of a commercial loan. Another benefit of commercial lending is that there are more opportunities and products available. The housing market is cyclical, but many commercial projects are built even in a economic downtown. Past residential growth fuels a need for more store and commercial business that does not stop when residential housing slows. This makes commercial real estate loans desirable for banks and lending institutions. Small banks and financial institutions cannot compete on a level playing field with large capital banks, simply because of the large amounts of money needed to finance commercial products. This phenomenon makes the commercial market much less competitive than the residential market. Large banks increase their bottom line by being in the forefront of commercial, which benefits stockholders. Despite the strengthened position, there is always the chance an investment could lose money. A natural or artificial disaster could cripple the project, or the company may not be able to continue payments upon completion. However, even in such rare cases there are ways to deal with the issues. Assuming the project was properly insured, a profit can still be turned on such commercial real estate loans. Such a result is good for every party involved in the process. For commercial financing and commercial real estate lending see East Coast Commercial Finance.
