Japan Wants Space Plane or Capsule by 2022

Japan hopes to be launching astronauts aboard a manned capsule or space plane by 2022, and the nation is also eyeing point-to-point suborbital transportation over the longer haul.

The capsule or mini-shuttle ? which may resemble Sierra Nevada's Dream Chaser space plane ? would each accommodate a crew of three and carry up to 880 pounds (400 kilograms) of cargo, officials with the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) said this month.

The mini-shuttle would weigh 26,400 pounds (11,975 kg) and land at one of five suitable runways worldwide. Because a launch abort from Japan?s Tanegashima Space Center would mean a Pacific Ocean landing, the space plane would also have to be able to cope with the sea.

JAXA is considering two different versions of the capsule, which would have a similar internal volume to SpaceX's Dragon spacecraft. The 15,400-pound (6,985 kg) variant employs parachutes, while the 19,800-pound (8,981 kg) model uses a more maneuverable parafoil for greater landing accuracy to within a 1.9-mile (3 kilometers) radius. [How SpaceX's Dragon Capsule Works (Infographic)]

The heavier capsule would be able to land on solid ground, while the lighter model would only touch down at sea. JAXA also foresees further development of the capsule for exploration beyond low-Earth orbit, officials said. JAXA officials presented the human spaceflight concepts at the?at the International Astronautical Federation?s meeting in Naples, Italy, earlier this month.

Building new capsules

Development of the crewed capsule will follow an unmanned reusable cargo capsule, called the HTV-R (R for "recovery"), which JAXA is planning as an evolution of its expendable H-IIB Transfer Vehicle (HTV). The HTV has delivered cargo to the International Space Station three times, with the most recent trip coming in July.

The current HTV spacecraft's pressurized cargo section would be replaced by the recoverable capsule, which is made of an aluminium alloy. Development of the HTV-R begins next year, and the first flight is targeted for 2017, JAXA officials said.

"For HTV-R we are asking for funding for this coming year, and we are expecting next year to start development phase for HTV-R, and for the crewed capsule we are conducting some key technology research," Kuniaki Shiraki, JAXA?s executive director of human space systems and utilization mission directorate, told SPACE.com. "This year on these [manned] technologies we are spending $600,000."

Shiraki was among those who spoke at the 63rd annual International Astronautical Congress.

The recoverable capsule will use some of the same technologies as the current HTV, including its systems for rendezvous and docking, power, communications, and guidance, navigation and control. But the HTV-R will require development of some new gear, such as thermal protection, accurate re-entry guidance and parachute systems.

Both the HTV-R and the manned capsule would have an internal volume of 529 cubic feet (15 cubic meters), JAXA officials say. The cargo capsule would be 13.8 feet (4.2 m) wide and 10.8 feet (3.3 m) tall, with a dry mass of 9,680 pounds (4,390 kg), and it would re-enter the atmosphere ballistically.

The recoverable cargo capsule's propulsion systems will use green propellant, and its heat shield will be made of a low density, lightweight material. The capsule would not be fully reusable; its interior would be refurbished and the thermal protection panels on the exterior would be replaced, assuming a sea landing. A new rocket

While the HTV, and eventually the HTV-R, are launched on the H-IIB rocket, all three of the proposed manned vehicles ? the two capsule variants and the mini-shuttle ? would be launched by a newly proposed rocket called the H-X.

The H-X will be a new design with higher reliability for human-rated launches, and it's slated to become operational in the 2020s. Its prime contractor is Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI).

Concept studies and research for key technologies have been carried out to decide the H-X baseline configuration and to assess its feasibility. As a result, a fully liquid propellant vehicle with a single two-stage core that uses a solid or liquid booster stage for heavy and geostationary orbit payloads is MHI?s baseline design.

The H-X?s engines will cluster together a higher-thrust evolution of JAXA?s LE-7A engines called the LE-X, which is now in the research phase to verify its feasibility, safety, reliability and cost-effectiveness, officials say.

Suborbital point-to-point

Japan's spaceflight plans don't stop with the HTV-R evolutions and hopes for a mini-shuttle. JAXA also has a long-term reusable space plane feasibility study underway that includes a road map.

This road map envisions a rocket-powered suborbital point-to-point (PtoP) vehicle with a 1,242-mile (2,000 km) range, as well as another PtoP vehicle with a 6,213-mile (10,000 km) range and a fully reusable two-stage-to-orbit manned space plane.

The shorter-range PtoP vehicle is a rocket glider weighing 118,800 pounds (53,520 kg). It coasts toward its destinations after achieving a speed more than 14 times the speed of sound using staged combustion aerospace engines.

The longer-range PtoP craft has a waverider design and a total weight of 660,000 pounds (299,370 kg). It would also glide to its target after accelerating to hypersonic speeds ? in this case, about five times the speed of sound ? but it would be capable of longer hypersonic cruises. This hypersonic aircraft?s design has a forebody that compresses the incoming air for the propulsion system, which combines a rocket with a ramjet.

Plans for the reusable two-stage-to-orbit manned space plane currently call for a vertical launch, though a horizontal takeoff may also be considered. In either case, both its booster stage and the 60-foot-long (18 m) orbiter it carries would land on a runway.

The vehicle exists only on paper at the moment. Howerver, JAXA is working toward ground-based engine tests and plans flight tests in five years or so.

JNF Web ? Underachiever Secrets Assessed for Creating Your Own ...

Underachiever Secrets is a brand new product created by highly acclaimed online businessman, Russell Brunson. He borrowed the underachiever concept from a seven year old product produced by Frank Kern and Ed Gale. If you feel a bit worn out regarding product creation courses, then you will be surprised when you find out how one of a kind this product really is. We don?t say that sarcastically because you will find so many different product creation methods people use. Just to begin with, there is a unique resource you will benefit from to locate profitable niches. Then you will be treated to a tool that helps you produce a high converting sales letter. Russell wanted to resolve the biggest stumbling blocks folks have with building and selling their own products. Perhaps lots of people are afflicted by information overload, plus they are unable to distinguish the useful information from the kind that will not help. The ultimate goal with Underachiever Secrets is designing a Clickbank product you will make money with.

To explain this, we have to consider Commission Inception. One great advantage to this training, and for those who get it, is that Russell has been creating products for quite a while. Russell started making his own products after studying Underachiever Mastery by Frank and Ed Gale. Russell seriously made a ton of money after he began marketing and advertising off the net. Brunson has considerable experience with showing other marketers how to do this through his own coaching and training program. So this Underachiever Secrets is truly a consequence of experience and training.

This course signifies a sea change in how this whole process is done. What is extraordinary about Underachiever Secrets is it uses automation for the entire process. Everything from the beginning stages of niche analysis through your sales letter to driving targeted visitors to your product sales copy. Russell absolutely has brought things to the next stage in the area of building businesses online with your own products.

However it isn?t all about software because bundled are videos, an ebook and tutorials that show you all you need to know and do. Underachiever Secrets program is made of four distinct parts each of which is for a unique use. Two areas of this software are devoted to discovering income generating markets to operate in. But Russell does supply coaching using videos, and the running time for that is six hours. Underachiever Secrets is really a lot more than software considering all the supporting training and training aids.

(AP) ? Top Republicans were slow to embrace tea party-backed Indiana Senate candidate Richard Mourdock after he ousted a longtime GOP senator from office. Though he eventually won their support ? and money ? Mourdock could see both fade after telling a live television audience that when a woman becomes pregnant during a rape, "that's something God intended."

Mourdock, who's been locked in one of the country's most expensive and closely watched Senate races, was asked during the final minutes of a debate Tuesday night whether abortion should be allowed in cases of rape or incest.

"I struggled with it myself for a long time, but I came to realize that life is that gift from God. And, I think, even when life begins in that horrible situation of rape, that it is something that God intended to happen," Mourdock said.

Mourdock became the second GOP Senate candidate to find himself on the defensive over comments about rape and pregnancy. Missouri Senate candidate Rep. Todd Akin said in August that women's bodies have ways of preventing pregnancy in cases of what he called "legitimate rape." Since his comment, Akin has repeatedly apologized but has refused to leave his race despite calls to do so by leaders of his own party, from GOP presidential hopeful Mitt Romney on down.

It was not immediately clear what effect Mourdock's comments might have during the final two weeks in the increasingly tight race against Democratic challenger Rep. Joe Donnelly. But they could prove problematic. Romney distanced himself from Mourdock on Tuesday night ? a day after a television ad featuring the former Massachusetts governor supporting the GOP Senate candidate began airing in Indiana.

"Gov. Romney disagrees with Richard Mourdock's comments, and they do not reflect his views," Romney spokeswoman Andrea Saul said in an email to The Associated Press. Romney aides would not say whether the ad would be pulled and if the Republican presidential nominee would continue to support Mourdock's Senate bid.

Other Republicans did not immediately weigh in. Indiana Republican Party spokesman Pete Seat referred comment to the Mourdock campaign. A spokesman for the National Republican Senatorial Committee did not immediately return a request for comment Tuesday night.

National Democrats quickly picked up on Mourdock's statement and used it as an opportunity to paint him as an extreme candidate, calling him a tea party "zealot." DNC Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz described Mourdock's comments as "outrageous and demeaning to women" and called on Romney to take his pro-Mourdock ad off the air.

Mourdock further explained Tuesday night after the debate that he did not believe God intended the rape, but that God is the only one who can create life.

"Are you trying to suggest somehow that God preordained rape, no I don't think that," Mourdock said. "Anyone who would suggest that is just sick and twisted. No, that's not even close to what I said."

In response, Donnelly said after the debate in southern Indiana that he doesn't believe "my God, or any God, would intend that to happen."

Mourdock, who ran unsuccessfully for Congress three times before becoming state treasurer, became one of the tea party's biggest winners of the 2012 primary season when he knocked off veteran Indiana Sen. Richard Lugar in a brutal campaign. Initially, national Republicans stayed out of the Indiana race because the race had appeared to be a likely win for the GOP.

But as the race grew tighter in recent months, Mourdock changed his tune and started trying to woo moderate voters. At the same time, top Republicans began stumping for Mourdock around the state in a push to break open the high-stakes Senate race. Republicans need to gain three seats, or four if President Barack Obama wins re-election, and seats that were predicted to remain or turn Republican have grown uncertain.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell came to Indianapolis for a fundraiser Monday, and Arizona Sen. John McCain and South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham campaigned for Mourdock last week. New Hampshire Sen. Kelly Ayotte is due in the state Wednesday.

Romney's coattails carry special significance in conservative Indiana, where Mourdock has underperformed Romney by 12 points in most public polls. Karl Rove's Crossroads GPS also has bought another $1 million of airtime in Indiana, making his group the biggest player in Indiana's Senate race. A message left for Crossroads GPS spokesman Nate Hodson was not immediately returned.

Donnelly, a moderate Democrat who opposes abortions, has spent much of his campaign highlighting Mourdock's tea party ties and trying to accuse him of being too extreme even for conservative Indiana. Democratic groups have bought another $1.6 million of airtime for Donnelly ads this week.

Ford closes Belgian plant in 2014; 9,500 jobs hit

BRUSSELS (AP) ? Ford Motor Co. will close a car plant in eastern Belgium ? one of its main European factories ? by the end of 2014, a move that will result in 4,500 direct job losses and 5,000 more among subcontractors.

Exactly half a century after construction on the Genk plant started, Ford told a management council there that production was winding down since slumping European sales has forced a restructuring of its plants.

"This is taking us by surprise and is an extremely bitter pill," Christian Democrat union representative Johan Lamers told The Associated Press.

Ford has been under pressure in Europe due to the region's dwindling demand for its models and the overall slide of car sales on the continent due to the debt crisis.

The company expects to lose more than $1 billion this year in Europe, where it gets a quarter of its sales. Analysts say Ford has more factory capacity than it needs.

The regional authorities in northern Belgium's Flanders are already looking how to recover money from the ?57 million it committed in 2010 to keep Ford rooted there for years to come.

"It is incomprehensible and a nightmare for those people," said Flanders minister president Kris Peeters.

"In October 2010, we negotiated and signed a deal worth many millions. And now they said 'OK, let's close Genk'," Peeters said.

The plant in Genk makes the midsize Mondeo, the S-MAX minivan and the Galaxy car. Ford said it plans to move the production of all three lines to Valencia, Spain.

"The proposed restructuring of our European manufacturing operations is a fundamental part of our plan to strengthen Ford's business in Europe," CEO Ford of Europe Stephen Odell said in a statement.

Ford has been struggling in Europe.

Figures from Acea, the European carmakers' association, show European mark sales have dropped 10.8 percent on a year-by-year basis in September. Ford's drop in sales was even bigger at 14.9 percent.

Ford's European management was expected to meet with Belgian Prime Minister Elio Di Rupo and regional Flemish authorities later Wednesday.

The announcement came barely a month after Ford had given reassurances about production at the Genk plant, Lamers said.

Ford Genk represents more than 30 percent of the car production in Belgium.

Workers took the announcement early Wednesday with lots of tears but relative calm. A bonfire was set up at the gate of the plant but there was little union action since the factory was in the middle of a three-week layoff because of slack demand.

Car workers looked into an uncertain future.

"Well, where are we going to find a job? It is very difficult in this time, in this crisis," said Ford employee Gustav Janssen.

How Companies Have Assembled Political Profiles for Millions of ...

A slide taken from an online slideshow by a political targeting firm.

If you're a registered voter and surf the web, one of the sites you visit has almost certainly placed a tiny piece of data on your computer flagging your political preferences. That piece of data, called a cookie, marks you as a Democrat or Republican, when you last voted, and what contributions you've made. It also can include factors like your estimated income, what you do for a living, and what you've bought at the local mall.

Across the country, companies are using cookies to tailor the political ads you see online. One of the firms is CampaignGrid, which boasted in a recent slideshow, "Internet Users are No Longer Anonymous."?The slideshow includes an image of the famous New Yorker cartoon from 1993: "On the Internet, nobody knows you're a dog." Next to it, CampaignGrid lists what it can now know about an Internet user: "Lives in Pennsylvania's 13th Congressional District, 19002 zip code, Registered primary voting Republican, High net worth household, Age 50-54, Teenagers in the home, Technology professional, Interested in politics, Shopping for a car, Planning a vacation in Puerto Rico."

The slideshow was online until last week, when the company removed it after we asked for comment. (Here is the full slideshow.) Rich Masterson, CampaignGrid's chairman, wrote in an email that the slideshow was posted in error: "It was an unapproved version of a sales deck that was posted by an intern who no longer works for the company."

CampaignGrid does indeed collect 18 different "attributes" for every voter, Masterson told ProPublica, including age, gender, political donations, and more. Campaigns use this data to tailor the online ads you see.

Online targeting has taken off this campaign season. ProPublica has identified seven companies that advertise the ability to help campaigns target specific voters online. Among them is Experian, the credit reporting company. Datalogix, a company that works with Facebook to track users' buying patterns, is also involved. (Here are marketing materials and comment from the seven companies). CampaignGrid and a few, similar firms have been profiled for their innovative approaches. Yet the scale of the targeting and the number of companies involved has received little notice.

Few of the companies involved in the targeting talk about it publicly. But CampaignGrid, which works with Republicans, and a similar, Democratic firm, Precision Network, told ProPublica they have political information on 150 million American Internet users, or roughly 80 percent of the nation's registered voters.

The information ? stripped of your name or address ? is connected to your computer via a cookie. Targeting firms say replacing your name with an ID number keeps the process anonymous and protects users' privacy.

But privacy experts say that assembling information about Internet users' political behavior can be problematic even if voters' names aren't attached.

"A lot of people would consider their political identity more private than lots of information," said William McGeveran, a data privacy expert at the University of Minnesota Law School. "We make more rules about medical privacy. We make more rules about financial privacy. So if you think private political beliefs are in that category, maybe you're concerned about having them treated like your favorite brand of toothpaste."

Google has stayed away from this kind of targeting. It classifies political beliefs as "sensitive personal information," in the same category as medical information and religious beliefs.

But other big players have embraced the "political cookie," as one company branded it.

As we reported in June, Yahoo and Microsoft sell access to your registration information for political targeting. That's one way CampaignGrid and other companies find you online. Political targeting firms say they also work with other websites, but would not name them.

While campaigns and the firms working with them can buy reams of data about voters, voters have been left mostly in the dark.

Many online ad companies mark targeted ads with a small blue triangle symbol, or the phrase "Ad Choices," and offer surfers a chance to opt out. But even if web users know what the triangle means, they get no information about how or why they were targeted.

"Consumers don't really understand what's going on and haven't given their permission," says Joseph Turow, a digital marketing and privacy expert at the University of Pennsylvania's Annenberg School for Communication.

There are few legal regulations governing how online targeting works, or what notification consumers must receive.

Online advertising experts point out that individual voting records are public information and have long been used to target voters through direct mail. And targeting companies say they are offering a valuable service. Instead of seeing random ads, users get to see ads from candidates they might actually want to support.

"We empower voters," Jeff Dittus, co-founder of Campaign Grid and now head of Audience Partners, wrote in an email. "We give voters information that is meaningful to them and helps them make choices."

Stuart Ingis, a lawyer for the Digital Advertising Alliance, an industry group, said that voter file targeting is a First Amendment issue, and that targeting should be protected as part of political speech.

"These technologies provide a method for politicians inexpensively to improve our democracy," he said. "I would say that the founding fathers firmly believed in the ability ? I think our society very much values the ability ? to efficiently reach a desired audience with a political message."

Not everyone seems to agree. A recent study from the University of Pennsylvania's Annenberg School found that 86 percent of surveyed adults did not want "political advertising tailored to your interests," and that 77 percent would not return to a website if they knew it "was sharing information about me with political advertisers."

While targeting firms promise a wealth of individual detail, it's hard to know how much information most campaigns are actually using.

"The more third-party data providers you use, the smaller the universe of people who you can reach becomes," CampaignGrid's Masterson said. "Republican women 25-34 who drive SUVs and have American Express cards, and go to the theater once a month ? that might be four people."

One place online voter targeting has been used successfully is in the state senate primary race of Morgan McGarvey, a Kentucky Democrat who faced off against three other Democratic candidates this May.

With four liberal candidates competing for a liberal district, McGarvey told ProPublica, he needed to convince the small number of voters who would turn out in the primary that they should vote for him.

His campaign worked with Precision Network to show online McGarvey ads to local voters under 35, and to female Democrats who had voted in at least three of the past five primary elections. (Two of his challengers were women.)

"When every dollar counts, when literally every vote counts, you have to be more targeted," he said.

"I do think it helped us win."

McGarvey is now running unopposed in the November election.

Have you seen a targeted political ad?

Help us find out how politicians are targeting you online.

1. If you spot a small blue triangle icon on any online political ad, or the words "Ad Choices," take a screenshot of the ad.

2. Then click on the blue triangle or the words "Ad Choices" to find out which company showed you the ad. Take a screenshot of that, too.

3. Email the screenshots to us at targeting2012@propublica.org. Please include the full URL of the page where you saw the ad.

If the ad asks you to "learn more," visit a website, donate, or sign a petition, please send us a screenshot of that site or petition, as well. (The page where the ad sends you may also be targeted to what advertisers know about you.)

Not sure how to take a screenshot? Here are the instructions if you're using a PC, using a Mac, or using a smartphone.

Proven Best Practices For Using Social Media Marketing | Eric Chua ...

If you have a business, your customers are usually on a social media site. You should join them and put your business onto a site for social networking. Determine which social network sites are popular with your customers, and include these in your marketing because if you hesitate to do this, you could be missing out on bringing in new customers and creating new relationships with them.

Special Offers

Promote your special offers via social networks. Facebook users will find more incentive to visit your page if you offer fresh content and special offers. Think of social networks as an opportunity to learn more about your products and get involved with them.

TIP! Gaining a large following on social networks necessitates more than just pushing your products. Post a link or a story from other people that has to do with you niche or industry.

It takes a great deal of patience to build a successful network in social media marketing. It is unlikely that you can recruit 15,000 fans in 24 hours. It has happened in rare occurrences, but it is unlikely that you will receive viral following in just one night. Your followers will increase as time goes on.

Make your page attractive by filling it with great content. Develop an article that provides solutions to problems in your field. Make sure your products and services are well reviewed, and add visual images if it is appropriate. Good content is your guarantee that people will want to share it.

You cannot do well in social media if people aren?t visiting your profile or are not interested in your content. Creating quality, well written content that informs and interests your potential visitors is the most effective way to attract traffic. Use intriguing headlines to make your content look professional.

TIP! Take the time to do more research about your different options if you are thinking about advertising with social networks. Every social media site is different; by understanding the differences you can tailor your approach.

Develop a real vision of yourself online, but keep in mind that your goal is to create a profitable company. Make sure you make a good impression, but avoid posting anything that is questionable. Make sure you maintain your own style, but keep videos relevant and tasteful. This will make your page much more interesting and profitable.

Promote coupons on your social media accounts that are time-sensitive. This can make people in the network more likely to pay close attention and jump on specials quickly, before they disappear. People will also be inclined to share news of the specials with their contacts.

Social Media

TIP! Make sure any company you want to use to help you with social marketing uses two-way. By knowing this, you can have more confidence in their willingness to deal with any problems you have.

An important aspect of business social media is company branding. Keep your logo as a avatar or perhaps use it to decorate the background, but make sure it is always visible. Keep the same color choices for all of your various social media accounts. Your followers will associate these colors with your brands and trust you because you are consistent. Branding should be an important strategy.

If Twitter is being used as part of your marketing strategy, you must be responsive and consistent. Always thank people for sharing your posts, and acknowledge and answer any questions as soon as you can. This creates a growing and interactive relationship rather than a simple ?company to consumer? transaction. This also helps your followers connect to you as a person, rather than a representative of a business.

Never require a lot of initial involvement from your consumers when they first enter your site. If a visitor is expected to provide personal data and take a survey at the very beginning of going to your website, they are going to hit the back button several times and go somewhere else. If you give the customer an easier, friendlier first impression, he is more likely to want to stay on your site and buy from you.

TIP! Interact with your customers, and potential customers, as much as you can. If it?s appropriate, comment on their blogs or Facebook status.

Stay away from tweets that consist of inspirational quotes, because your followers will interpret that as having nothing worth saying. This is filler content and will annoy some of your followers. Only post things that have something to do with your company or if you do it yourself.

If you want customers to respond to social media marketing, running specials that are exclusive if they follow you on those sites is a good way to accomplish that. When they notice deals open only to Facebook followers, they are sure to give you greater attention and share the information with friends.

Social Media

TIP! You must keep at social media marketing to succeed. Like anything worth doing, success is not going to happen overnight.

Experimenting with social media doesn?t mean abandoning traditional marketing methods. The best marketing plans need to start with a press release. It is also important to determine the target audience. Social media marketing is as effective as it is because it uses both traditional methods and new methods of advertising.

Let your customers know that you have turned to social media for marketing. Your customers can then join your pages; this allows them to expose their friends to it. This will provide you with a fairly easy source of advertisement. It is also more valuable than ordinary advertising since it?s a referral.

Social media is currently an important part of many business marketing efforts. You can engage any customer one-on-one, speak to the masses and tailor everything the world knows about your business all in one easy to use and cost effective place. You should get started and see the new possibilities for yourself.

TIP! If a person starts following your Twitter account, follow theirs in return. This is a courtesy that most people expect.

The Fear & Competition of Public Speaking ? The Aspiring ...

Public speaking infront of a group of critical strangers is universally mans greatest fear. Personally, I used to share echo this sentiment. I?ll admit it?s something I?ve avoided when possible. I?m not completely frightened per say ? in the past I just didn?t feel comfortable speaking in front of a group of people whom I don?t know.

Part of me feels as though I don?t have much to contribute of value, (translation: who cares what some dumbass like me has to say?) so why potentially embarrass myself in front of a group of strangers? The risk-reward didn?t seem to check out? Much like how terrified I was starting this blog.

The issue is vulnerability ? we struggle to step outside the comfort and safety of our daily routines to which w can control.

A Transformation

I?ve come to realise I?m in a somewhat unique situation (narcissistic rant coming). I?ve accomplished my goal of startimg a career the social media landscape ? making the transformation from full-time amateur athlete / student to working at a upstart tech company.

I was given the opportunity to speak to a group of university students a couple of months ago. The speaking gig was hardly something to boast about, it was a panel with three others. The subject of said panel? How to pursue a?career in e business. The audience comprised of Undergraduate Business School students looking to carve out a career in the digital space.

Given that I was in a similar position to these students a year ago ? I thought it a great chance to share advice and maybe weave a few tales of my journey.

Sharing and Competition ~ #Winning?

Any pre-game butterflies immediately vanished when I introduced myself to the eager students ? before i knew it, I even got a laugh or two out of the audience (shocker right?).

Sharing any knowledge I may have is pretty rewarding. Coming from a psychology background, I love to help people ? ?the fact that these students cared what I had to say is a pretty amazing feeling.

Coming from an athletic background, I actually compare public speaking to competing in sport. My mindset shifted to competition mode when the panel started? For some crazy reason I wanted to ?outperform? my fellow panelists (who were all amazing by the way).

Simply put? I wanted to win.

Express Yourself ~ The Rush

Starting this blog was terrifying. Much like anything else, there?s a learning curve. Getting comfortable with sharing my thoughts in writing took time, public speaking is similar.

Surprise surprise? like anything else, it takes practice.

The rush I got from public speaking was pretty amazing.?I was shocked at the response from the students of my Alma Mater. I?m hooked ?and I can?t wait to speak more frequently.

Are you scared of public speaking? Does it get easier with practice?

Romney takes time to prepare for Tuesday's debate

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) ? Tuesday's presidential debate has Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney's attention. He's spent nearly four hours Saturday morning preparing for his second encounter with President Barack Obama.

He and top advisers have been huddled in an Embassy Suites hotel in Columbus, Ohio. Romney's debate training partner, Republican Sen. Rob Portman, joined him, along with senior aides Beth Myers, Eric Fehrnstrom and Peter Flaherty. Friend and former colleague Bob White and strategist Stuart Stevens are also on hand.

Romney is spending much of the rest of the day driving his logoed bus across Ohio. He is to speak at Shawnee State University in Portsmouth, Ohio, and later in Lebanon, Ohio, at Portman's Golden Lamb Inn and Restaurant.

Obama and Vice President Joe Biden have no public events scheduled.

Researchers ID unique geological 'sombrero' uplift in South America

ScienceDaily (Oct. 11, 2012) ? Scientists at Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego have used 20 years of satellite data to reveal a geological oddity unlike any seen on Earth.

At the border of Argentina, Bolivia and Chile sits the Altiplano-Puna plateau in the central Andes region, home to the largest active magma body in Earth's continental crust and known for a long history of massive volcanic eruptions. A study led by Yuri Fialko of Scripps and Jill Pearse of the Alberta Geological Survey has revealed that magma is forming a big blob in the middle of the crust, pushing up Earth's surface across an area 100 kilometers (62 miles) wide, while the surrounding area sinks, leading to a unique geological phenomenon in the shape of a Mexican hat that the researchers have described as the "sombrero uplift."

Since the magma motion is happening at a great depth and at a fairly slow rate -- Earth's surface rises at about a centimeter per year or roughly the rate fingernails grow -- there is no immediate danger of a volcanic outpouring, the researchers said.

The details of the study, which was funded by the National Science Foundation, are published in the Oct. 12 issue of the journal Science.

"It's a subtle motion, pushing up little by little every day, but it's this persistence that makes this uplift unusual. Most other magmatic systems that we know about show episodes of inflation and deflation," said Fialko, a professor of geophysics in the Cecil H. and Ida M. Green Institute of Geophysics and Planetary Physics at Scripps.

The researchers have attributed the observed steady motion and sombrero-shaped deflection of Earth's surface to a large blob of magma, called a "diapir" in geological terms, forming on top of the Altiplano-Puna magma body. Diapirs have been studied using geologic records in rocks frozen many millions of years ago, but the new study is the first to identify an active magma diapir rising through the crust at present day.

Fialko said a similar uplift phenomenon is occurring near Socorro, New Mexico, but at a much lower rate.

"Satellite data and computer models allowed us to make the important link between what's observed at the surface and what's happening with the magma body at depth," said Fialko.

Fialko said the sombrero uplift could provide insights into the initial stages of massive magmatic events leading to the formation of large calderas. Such "super-volcano" events erupt thousands of cubic kilometers of magma into the atmosphere and can affect local and global climates. Compared with the Icelandic volcano eruption in 2011 that spewed large amounts of ash into the atmosphere and disrupted global air travel, Fialko said, a super-volcano event would be thousands of times greater.

"Those were truly disaster-type events," said Fialko. "Fortunately such events haven't happened in human history, but we know they did happen in the Altiplano-Puna area in the past."

Spotting a trend in the genes: Three genes that cause cancer and disease in humans also 'paint' spots on butts of fruit flies

ScienceDaily (Oct. 12, 2012) ? Spots on the butts of fruit flies are really, really small. But what a researcher and his graduate student are discovering about them could be gigantic.

Thomas Werner, assistant professor of biological sciences at Michigan Technological University, and his PhD student, Komal Kumar Bollepogu Raja, have discovered that three genes that cause cancer and disease in humans also "paint" the spots on the fly's body. This discovery could enable researchers to study how those genes work in fruit flies and apply that knowledge to treating cancer in people.

"The last common ancestor of man and fruit flies lived about 600 million years ago," says Werner. "All the genes needed to build a body were already present in that ancestor, and today we still share virtually all of our body-building genes with fruit flies. This is why we are able to study human diseases like cancer in fruit flies."

Werner and Raja are interested in how DNA encodes body forms and patterns in animals. They use color patterns as a model.

They've made strong connections between developed spots and three genes, all of which have cancer- and disease-causing counterparts in humans. Thus, the abdominal spots of this tiny fruit fly could be a great model for understanding genetic pathways that cause cancer.

"We are looking here at proto-oncogenes, which are cancer genes that cause disease when they are active in an uncontrolled manner," Werner explains. "Both humans and flies have them, and in flies they learned to paint black spots on the abdomen."

This reveals that old genes can learn new tricks; they just need to become part of a new genetic pathway, like, in this case, adding designer patterns to a boring garment. "And you get your evolutionary novelty without having to invent new genes," Werner says.

Werner's been down this research road before. He introduced stripes onto the spotted wings of fruit flies ("from a leopard to a zebra"), showing that a certain cancer gene is sufficient to induce pigment patterns on Drosophila wings, and landed on the cover of Nature, one of the leading scientific journals in the world. The magazine's cover hangs in his office.

"Now we want to use our new methods to find out how the abdominal pigment pattern is generated, and how it is encoded in DNA," says Raja."

The genes that seem to paint the pigment spots on the abdomen are important for other reasons, Werner says. Some of them have additional roles in defining the head-to-tail axis in animals and are crucial for the proper development of the vertebrae in humans. If these genes misbehave during the development of the human embryo, gross disabilities or embryonic death will occur.

"Many diseases like cancer and vertebra-related disabilities are caused by the 'misbehavior' of genes, when they are expressed at times and places or in amounts they are not supposed to be," Werner says. "Our work focuses on understanding how the cancer- and disease-causing genes in the fruit fly are regulated, and how they regulate their downstream target genes."

The biggest promise for the future, however, involves those three "bad" genes. By studying them, Werner and Raja believe they can identify targets for gene therapies against cancer and genetically inherited developmental defects.

Targeting these genes when they start misbehaving could lead to happier and healthier tomorrows for many people: a grand result from research on miniscule flies.

Pure Fitness Training Blog: My Story

Why I Do What I Do

When I was in my mid-twenties I was fairly aimless. I had graduated college with a degree in History and had been working as an auto mechanic to pay the bills. In retrospect, the most valuable skill learned during those years was how to fix a car, and the most valuable lesson was that I did not want to manually labor the rest of my working life.

So one day I decided to quit the auto shop, take a two month sabbatical from working, and apply to graduate school for History. It was during the first two weeks of my first semester in graduate school that my most life-changing event to date occurred: my younger sister (and only sibling) passed away suddenly. She had just turned 21, and left this world in January 2002, on Martin Luther King, Jr. day.

I was already regretting my decision to start back to school, so when the tragedy happened I had an ironclad excuse to quit, so I did, leaving me once again with no direction, and pretty darn sad on top of that.

In the fall prior I had started getting into exercise, and when Katie died exercise became my outlet, my way to escape reality. It was the only thing that made me feel good, and my interest in the physiology behind exercise was sparked as I began to consume information on the theories behind running and training in general.

Still aimless from a career perspective and hurt from the loss, it became clear to me that I needed to spend my time on this earth doing things I enjoyed, not things I am forced to do. I enjoyed exercise, I enjoyed learning about how the body adapted to exercise, and slowly it became clear that this should be my next career path.

I looked into the Master?s program in something mysterious called ?Exercise Physiology? that was offered at U of L. Despite my complete lack of a science background, I was accepted into the program and began in the fall of 2002. Initially, I was lost, failing, and considered dropping out. I stuck it out, however, and finished the two year program at the top of the class.

Since then the road has taken me many, many places, settling now as a college professor and business owner, with a special interest in improving longevity.

A career in exercise/health is ideal for me for two main reasons: first, because I absolutely love it, and second, because it involves helping others. Both of these make me happy, and that was the goal after my sister passed away- to do something that made me happy.

The opportunity to help people improve their health, to possibly help them extend their lives by taking steps to avoid chronic diseases that reduce lifespan, allows me to feel like I am doing something to help others avoid the tragic situation that I had to experience- losing a loved one before his/her time.
