Thar she blows: Map shows wind in real time

The wind is all around us. You can see it move the trees, sweep through grasses, and ruffle your child?s hair. And now, we can click on a wind map of the United States and see it streaking across the country in real time.

The wind map?is the creation of technologists Fernanda Viegas and Martin Wattenberg, who lead Google?s "Big Picture" visualization research group in Cambridge, Mass. Their aim is to "invent new ways for people to think and talk about data," they explain on their website.

Wind, they note, is an ancient source energy that is all around us ?- "energy that powered the first explorations of the world, and that may be key to the future."

The wind map, they team notes, is a personal art project that is not associated with any company. This project echoes computer-generated visualizations of how Earth?s oceans flow and the universe grew up, highlighted in msnbc.com?s Cosmic Log.

In the end of 2011, Russia and India signed a deal on handing Russia?s Nerpa nuclear submarine to India on a 10-year lease. Now the submarine is on the way to India. Within the Indian Navy the submarine will be given a new name ?Chakra.? The Indian crew of the submarine was trained in the Russian submarine training center. There is also a team of Russian sailors on board of the submarine who could assist the Indian crew if it is necessary.

The multipurpose nuclear submarine was built at a ship building facility in the Far Eastern Primorye region. In the early 2011, the submarine underwent all the required sea trials. Technically, the Nerpa submarine is equal to submarines of such class as the US? ?Los Angeles? submarine, Vice President of the Academy of Geopolitical Studies Konstantin Sivkov says:

"No other submarine in the world can be compared to Nerpa in terms of its technical characteristics. British versions are 2nd generation submarines. France?s Rubis class submarines were built in the early 1970s. Our submarines are 3rd generation submarines or 3 plus to be exact, just like American ones. What about lease prices - here we are beyond competition."

Russia and India raditionally had firm ties in defense industry. The influence of the USSR on the international arena had a significant influence on India and helped it to win independence in 1947. The first weapon system of independent India was made in the USSR. Today the Indian Navy has submarines, aircraft carriers, destroyers and missiles boats which were built at Russian shipping yards and Indian plants are producing tanks and armed vehicles under the Russian license, the Deputy Head of the Institute of political and military analysis Alexander Kramchin says:

"India ranks first in the world in terms of imports of weapons and Russia accounts for more than 70 % of these imports."

At the current arms exhibition in Delhi Russia has received orders for the production of military equipment and weapons for $11 billion. The question is - why do we lease but not sell the nuclear submarine to India? The matter is that the world knows no precedents when a country sold its strategic weapons, Vice President of the Academy of Geopolitical Studies Konstantin Sivkov explains:

"Russia sells aircraft up to the class of a bomber aircraft. As a rule, it does not sell strategic long-range bomber aircraft. For example, we leased out Tu 22M aircraft to India."

As early as 1988 the USSR leased its K-43 nuclear submarine to the Indian Navy. It was a second generation submarine. Indian Navy officers now recall that it was a good school for them. Many of the crew members of the submarine later occupied key posts in the commandment of the Indian Navy. The practical experience gained in the period of K-43 submarine?s lease enabled Indian engineers and designers to make significant progress in their own development of nuclear submarines. According to the Daily Times of India newspaper, in April sea trials of India?s Arihant nuclear submarine Arihant will be conducted and in the early 2013 it is expected to be added to the Indian armed forces. If it happens India will become the sixth state which has nuclear submarines in service.

VANCOUVER, British Columbia (AP) ? Beach shots depict her as every inch a curvaceous beauty queen.

But 23-year-old Jenna Talackova was born male, and that led the Miss Universe Canada organizers to disqualify her last week as a finalist in the 61st Miss Universe Canada pageant taking place in May.

The rules of the contest run by the Donald Trump organization say entrants must be "naturally born" females.

The Vancouver woman underwent a sex change four years ago.

"She did not meet the requirements to compete despite having stated otherwise on her entry form," said a statement from Miss Universe Canada. "We do, however, respect her goals, determination and wish her the best."

The pageant's New York-based parent backed the decision.

"After review, organizers discovered that Jenna Talackova falsified her application and did not meet the necessary requirements to compete in the 2012 Miss Universe Canada pageant," a statement said.

The disqualification has won Talackova widespread sympathy and raised the question of whether the pageant has the right to decide who is female.

Talackova is obtaining legal counsel and is expected to make a statement next week, said her spokesman, Rory Richards.

Her change of gender was hardly a secret before the event because she had competed in the 2010 Tiffany Miss International Queen Competition for transgendered and transsexual women in Pattaya, Thailand. In a video interview for that pageant, she said she had lived her life as a female since age 4, began hormone therapy at 14 and changed sex at 19.

"I regard myself as a woman with a history," she said.

Connie McNaughton, Miss World Canada in 1984 and first runner-up for the world crown, called the decision outdated and discriminatory.

Some countries have their candidates undergo cosmetic surgery, she said, so what's wrong with sex-change surgery "because in your heart and soul you believe yourself to be a woman?"

A Vancouver transgendered activist, Jamie Lee Hamilton, said Talackova could sue for violation of her human rights.

"She was born with male genitalia and is being treated as a second-class citizen," Hamilton said. "Under the eyes of the law and the medical profession, she's a legal female."

Prof. Patrizia Gentile of Ottawa's Carleton University, who did a dissertation on beauty pageants, equated the ban with the exclusion of blacks and Jews from pageants in earlier times. "We're seeing more and more transgendered women wanting to be beauty contestants," she said. "The rule is incongruent with the culture."

Besides, she said, "Your genitalia have nothing to do with how you perform femininity."

Prof. Kathleen Lahey, a gender issues expert at Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario, said the organizers are looking at the issue wrongly; "If the organizers were being honest, they would recognize that this particular competitor was perhaps one of their most brilliant competitors ever ? to make it into the finals having performed the female gender so very well."

Spencer Chandra Herbert is among members of the British Columbia provincial legislature who are pushing legislation to guarantee equal rights in the area of gender identity. He said Talackova's exclusion shows how misunderstood the subject is.

"She may have had male bits when she was born but she's a female," he said. "I think Donald Trump and his Miss Universe contest need to get into the current century and get in line with the current science and respect that."

Trump's office said he was not commenting on the matter.

From the conservative side of Canadian society, Gwen Landolt, national vice president of REAL Women of Canada, said the pageant was simply being realistic in barring Talackova.

"Even though she had surgery and hormones, her DNA is still that of a man, his reproductive system is still that of a man," Landolt said.

"To consider yourself Miss Universe is to actually ask for more pain, suffering and rejection," Landolt said. "I'm sorry this person has put himself (or) herself though this."

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) ? This is South Korea, right? The democracy with a free press and a close alliance with the United States?

When President Barack Obama arrived at the presidential palace in Seoul Sunday, he was missing his constant traveling companions: members of the U.S. press corps traveling in Obama's motorcade.

In an embarrassing bilateral blockade, members of the media were denied entrance to the Blue House. The messy scene resulted in their missing Obama's meeting with South Korean President Lee Myung-bak.

At first, the media were held inside an entrance to the building as security scrambled to lock the doors around them. When that didn't work, they walked up a street and were met by security guards brandishing batons.

No reason for the mix-up was ever provided.

The press eventually got in, and good thing ? hard to have a press conference without reporters around.

Obama and U.S. troops stationed in South Korea exchanged touches of home during the president's visit to Camp Bonifas, just outside the Demilitarized Zone at the border between North and South Korea.

Obama thanked the soldiers for presenting him with a "spiffy" black jacket to mark the occasion. "Whoever arranged to make sure that it fit ? I'm sure it wasn't the General ? I appreciate it," Obama said to laughter.

In exchange, the basketball-obsessed president played the role of sportscaster, giving the soldiers an update on the unfolding NCAA basketball tournament.

"For those of you guys who missed the ball games ? Florida got beat by Louisville, and Ohio State just beat Syracuse," Obama said. "So I don't know how your brackets are doing."

It's a hypothetical matchup in a single state, months before the general election. So, why does it matter?

For one thing, the poll points to momentum in the wrong direction in an important state. As recently as late December, Quinnipiac had Romney beating Obama, 44 to 42 percent.

Obama inched past Romney in the state for the first time this election cycle in February, when the Quinnipiac poll had him leading, 47 to 43 percent.

Now, that margin is getting wider. And the poll points to particular warning signs for Romney among women. Among Virginia women, the president leads 52 to 39 percent.

"The president's lead over Romney in Virginia is due mainly to his strong margin among women ... but he also wins 48 percent of men to Romney's 45 percent," said?Peter Brown, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute.

Romney's status as GOP nominee is becoming more certain as the delegate math gets harder for Santorum. But Romney now needs to strike a fine balance: continuing to court conservative Republicans, whose votes he will need to sew up the nomination, without alienating the women, independent voters, and more moderate Republicans whose votes he will need in November.

There are also indications in the poll that Romney just isn't that well liked.

Obama's favorability rating ? the percentages of voters that see him either favorably or unfavorably ? was 51 to 44 percent. And he got the best job approval score he's received in almost a year in Virginia, with voters approving of the job he's doing 49 to 47 percent.

"These numbers don't constitute a mandate, but they are an improvement," Mr. Brown said.

Romney, on the other hand, gets a negative favorability rating, 36 to 43 percent. It's the first time since Quinnipiac began polling that question in October that Romney's favorability score has been negative, and it's not a good sign for the former Massachusetts governor.

Back in October, his favorability score was 38 to 29 percent.

In other words, Romney's performance so far ? in what has been a bruising primary season ? doesn't seem to have helped him among voters in a key state. Obama, meanwhile, is benefiting from the recovering economy. And polls like this underscore why Obama is choosing to focus on women as a major key to his reelection.

It's one poll in one state, nearly eight months before the election. But it shows warning signs that Romney will need to heed.

Genetic mutations for breast cancer have become a hot topic of research lately. Between 3% to 10% of breast cancers may be related to changes in either the gene BRCA1 or the gene BRCA2. Women can inherit these mutations from their parents and it may be worth testing for either mutation if a woman has a particularly strong family history of breast cancer (meaning multiple relatives affected, especially if they are under 50 years old when they get the disease). If a woman is found to carry either mutation, she has a 50% chance of getting breast cancer before she is 70. Family members may elect to get tested to see if they carry the mutation as well. If a woman does have the mutation, she can get more rigorous screening or even undergo preventive (prophylactic) mastectomies to decrease her chances of contracting cancer. The decision to get tested is a highly personal one that should be discussed with a doctor who is trained in counseling patients about genetic testing. Certain factors which increase a woman?s risk of breast cancer can be altered including taking hormone replacement therapy (long term use of estrogens with progesterone for menopause symptoms slightly increases your risk), taking birth control pills (a very slight increased risk that disappears in women who have stopped them for over 10 years), not breastfeeding, drinking 2 to 5 alcoholic drinks a day, being overweight (especially after menopause), and not exercising. All of these modifiable risk factors are not nearly as important as gender, age, and family history, but they are things that a woman can control that may reduce her chances of developing a breast malignancy. Remember that all risk factors are based on probabilities, and even someone without any risk factors can still get breast cancer. Proper screening and early detection are our best weapons in reducing the mortality associated with this disease. How can I prevent breast cancer? The most important risk factors for the development of breast cancer cannot be controlled by the individual.
