NEVADA CITY, Calif. March 9, 2012 - "We are currently taking sign-ups from any artists, performers or techies in their teens or twenties who want to be part of the next ASH Youth Arts Showcase at Miners Foundry," according to ASH co-producer Rahlene Weeden.
The Alliance for Social Health (ASH) and the Miners Foundry Cultural Center in Nevada City are presenting the second in a series of young artists showcases Friday, March 30, from 6 p.m. to midnight.
In addition to the performing arts ? music, dance, poetry and comedy ? the showcase will also feature visual artwork, Weeden said. This means anything from video to sculpture to drawing and painting to photography to fine arts crafts, she added.
This showcase will also offer young people the chance to learn behind-the-scenes stagecraft.
"We will have volunteers from the professional arts community involved in the production of this event. These folks will be working with participating young people during the set-up of the event to offer instruction and tips on essentials such as exhibition design for visual artists, and sound and lighting for performers," said Chad Conner Crow, ASH co-producer.
"The Miners Foundry is proud to support young artists in our community through our Emerging Artists Program, which is made possible, in part, by a grant from the William and Marion Ghidotti Foundation," said Gretchen Bond, Executive Director of the Miners Foundry Cultural Center.
"Now is the time to sign up to be in the show," Weeden stressed. Likewise, now is the time for arts and entertainment professionals who want to mentor the next generation to volunteer time, training and materials, she added.
The deadline to sign-up is March 23, but early entries are highly encouraged. E-mail allianceforsocialhealth@gmail.com or call (530) 272-3538, and leave a message for Chad or Rahlene.
"It doesn't cost anything to participate in the show," said Crow, who is a professional promoter and musician with the bands Grease Grit & Grime, Organasm Orchestra and Home Free.
Tickets to attend the show, however, are affordably priced. Advance tickets are $5 with current student ID or $7 for general admission. At the door, tickets will be $7 for students with ID and $10 general admission. Tickets are available at Briar Patch Co-op, The Book Seller, Yabobo, the Nevada City Box Office, and online at www.minersfoundry.org.
In recognition that this showcase involves transitional age youth of differing levels of maturity, the event producers and sponsors have designated 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. as a family-friendly slot for younger performers and artists. Doors will open at 6 p.m. for the art gallery. The show will start at 7 p.m. After 9 p.m., the performances and art will be more R-rated, the organizers said.
Soft drinks and snacks will be available for sale. People who are of legal age may purchase wine and beer.
ASH is one of the youth components of the Alliance for Wellbeing, a nonprofit mental wellness agency in Grass Valley run entirely by peers ? people who have survived mental illness, gender identity discrimination, substance abuse and/or just plain bad craziness.
Proceeds from the showcase, which also include a silent auction, will benefit youth activities of the Alliance for Social Health and the Alliance for Wellbeing.
