To mark this year?s Sports Day in Canada, a national celebration of sport, from grassroots to high-performance levels, Community Active Living Lambton (CALL) and the Sarnia-Lambton Local Immigration Partnership (LIP) are hosting the Sports Day in Canada Multicultural Elementary Games on September 25th.? Approximately 350 elementary school students will gather in Canatara Park to participate in a variety of sport 'try-it' demonstrations.? Olympic themed opening ceremonies will feature a keynote address from local Olympic High Jump Coach Joel Skinner.
?Sport can be a powerful and positive influence in our communities,? says Kelly Murumets, President and CEO of ParticipACTION, the national voice of physical activity and sport participation in Canada. ?Sports Day in Canada is a great opportunity for families and kids of all ages to celebrate their favourite sport or try their hand at something new ? it?s all part of finding fun, easy ways to live a healthier, more active lifestyle.?
Sports Day in Canada, on September 29, demonstrates that sport has the power to build community, fortify national spirit and promote healthy, active living.
?When sport is focused on fairness, excellence, inclusion and fun, it can reduce crime, stimulate the economy and teach important life lessons,? said Karri Dawson, Director of True Sport Operations.
The official day caps off a week of more than a thousand local events, and includes a special television broadcast on CBC Sports. Sports Day in Canada is presented by CBC Sports, ParticipACTION and True Sport, working with national sporting organizations and their networks of coaches, athletes and enthusiasts across the country.
?We?re thrilled to be part of Sports Day in Canada,? said Anita Trusler, Chair of the CALL Committee. ?This event is a great opportunity to promote physical activity and celebrate the diverse sport opportunities our community offers.? Over 350 local youth will be introduced to ten unique sport demonstrations.?
While Sports Day is "officially" on Sept. 29, the Sept. 25 event is an opportunity to engage students in events leading up to that day, said Trusler.
The Sports Day in Canada Multicultural Elementary Games will feature Olympic themed opening ceremonies, complete with a keynote address from local Olympic coach Joel Skinner and a classical Indian dance performance by local dancer Prasanna Thirumalai.? Demonstration sport activities include Cricket, Field Hockey, Lacrosse, Martial Arts, Soccer, Rugby, Running, Bocce, Track and Field and Yoga.? The event will kick-off on Tuesday September 25th at the band shell in Canatara Park starting at 10:00 am. Activities will wrap up by 1:45 pm.
The purpose of the local Sports Day in Canada event is to increase access to sport and recreation opportunities and to promote cultural awareness of sport.? Twenty-six third year students from the Sport and Recreation Administration Program at Lambton College will provide organizational support for the event. The underlying message of the day is to 'Get Out and Play, 60 Minutes Every Day'.? Funding for the event has been provided by a Sports Day in Canada grant.?
