Living Wills Introduced in Ireland

You may have heard reports in the media earlier today about new legislation introducing living wills in Ireland.

A living will allows you to specify in advance what medical treatment you should or should not get in the future, when you may no longer be able to take decisions for yourself. There is currently no provision for living wills in Irish law.

The Advance Health Care Decisions Bill, 2012 passed the second stage in the Dail today and has now gone to committee stage. I?ll be keeping a close eye on the legislation and as soon as it?s passed I?ll let you know.
