THE reignited debate about whether dogs should be allowed at Coast restaurants has resulted in a dogfight by our readers.

Yesterday the Daily's front page story about the Food Standards Code going up for review, attracted more than 100 comments with readers clearly divided on the issue.

Dogs in outdoor dining areas has been one of the hottest local government issues in years.

But the code that prevents restaurant operators from making their own decisions regarding the presence of dogs in their outdoor premises is being formally reviewed by Food Standards Australia New Zealand.

In the Daily's online poll asking if pet dogs should be allowed in outdoor dining areas 47% agreed, while 52% disagreed.

Blogger Hermes from Mountain Creek agreed with Sunshine Coast Council Mayor Mark Jamieson's call to let the market decide.

"Leave it up to customer demand, and to the restaurant," Hermes said.

"There are hundreds of coffee shops and restaurants on the Coast, some may choose to allow dogs (outside only) and others may not, and advertise accordingly.

"Others may choose to ban them (and bratty children too?) and advertise accordingly.

"Then people can make their own choice about which restaurant to attend or not.

"Some people like dogs, some people hate them. That's their right."

Public submissions on the proposal must be made by June 13.
